Xylitol, Hidden in Plain View

That familiar worry, the sight of the dog getting into the trash and eating a bunch of stuff he shouldn’t. The discarded debris of items he found inedible. But still, there is so much he ate! Now you’re frantically searching what to do, what things are poisonous and what might just cause an upset stomach. This blog is all about one of that enemy we covered last time: xylitol. It’s a sugar alcohol used most commonly as a sweetener but the places it shows up will surprise you! No further delay, here’s a list of the places that this toxic compound is found.

There are many more products that have xylitol in them, much to our dismay.  It’s found in foods where a sweetener might be used, even in pacifier and bottle wipes, personal lubricants and even some clothing! The best defense is knowledge and prevention, keep an eye on the labels of the products you buy and keep them out of reach of all your animals and you’ll go a long way to keeping them safe and healthy.

Should you see any signs that point to a sick dog, contact us or your local vet immediately and get your pet the support they need!
