Welcome back to our blog! Last time we discussed 5 Dog Personalities for You and Your Family, this time we discuss 5 more dog breeds and their personalities. It can be a challenge finding that one dog that fits you and your family best, so read our previous post (if you haven’t already done so) along with this post to help you on your journey of finding a loving companion.
- Weimaraner
This breed has recently been made popular by the photographer William Wegman who portrayed the dogs as humans. Although these dogs are sweethearts they require a good alpha in the family as they like to take control and test the waters. Weimaraner’s also require a lot of exercise to create an even temperament and calm environment. When running them outdoors or allowing play outside, be sure to keep a close eye on them as they tend to follow their nose and ears and capture whatever they sense is close by, even if that means finding a way to escape the backyard.
Although these dogs require a lot of activity outdoors they will be great companions following you to every room in the house, so be prepared to give a lot of affection to this dog. Be sure to also give lots of praise and treats during training, but you must be confident in training your dog or they will end up taking over.
If you have an active lifestyle or active children the Weimaraner is perfect for you. They will not only tire you out, but will also tire themselves out to then sit on the couch and snuggle up with you and the family!
- Dalmatian
These dogs are great with children as they love to play indoors or outdoors with the family. Eager to jump around and on people, Dalmatians need a lot of exercise to control their indoor tendencies of hopping up and down on furniture. They enjoy outdoor activities, whether it be running, biking, hiking, or a simple game of Frisbee in the yard.
Quick and eager to learn, this breed requires good training and positive reinforcement with treats. Highly intelligent, Dalmatians love learning new tricks and constant agility training. This dog is best suited for a home with a family that enjoys an active lifestyle and bringing their loving companion along for the ride.
- English Bulldog
The English Bulldog has a quiet and docile demeanor. These dogs are people oriented and will search for human attention frequently. Used to bait bull originally, the dog is often protective of loved ones making them a great watchdog.
The English Bulldog’s sweet nature makes them wonderful with children. They are fairly easy to train as they want to please their owners. This breed also requires a moderate amount of exercise as they are a small to medium size dog, and prefer to plop down and watch a movie with you and the kids! However, they will drool and snore quite a bit due to their short snout causing breathing issues in especially hot climates, so prepare for a loud one in bed with you.
- Labrador Retriever
Labrador Retrievers enjoy the company of their owners and other dogs. With high energy levels a Labrador Retriever needs to be exercised a few hours a day to prevent chewing and destructive behavior from a young age. These dogs are lovable, loyal, and friendly to everyone. They are happiest when they are involved in family activities, especially outdoors.
Labs are one of the easiest breeds to train since they love to please and receive treats. To hold their attention during training be sure to keep it fun and engaging. Basic training is required at a young age because of the puppy-like behavior carried into adulthood. Always have chew toys in the house as chewing is a commonality in Labs, but this can be prevented from proper training during puppyhood.
Labrador Retrievers are best suited for people and families that enjoy outdoor activities and are prepared to spend time loving and being loved by this dog. Children will especially love running around the yard and playing fetch with the beloved dog.
- Mixed Breeds
While all of the breeds mentioned above are amazing, Mixed Breeds can be one of the best options since they have the personality traits of two or more dogs. The best place to get a mixed breed is from one of your local shelters. Be sure to play with the dog and see how it reacts to you and your family, and speak to someone who works with the dog to understand its common behaviors. No different than any other breed mixed dogs require proper training and all the love they can get.
No matter the breed of dog you choose, prepare to give lots of love, time, and energy to the dog. While every breed of dog has different personalities (even within their own breed) all they want to do is please you and your family.
